Portland City Guide

I've put together a list of what I've found to be some of the best spots and hidden gems in the Portland area.

Portland City Guide

If any of you follow my page on Instagram, you’ll know that I’ve recently made the move to Portland, Oregon. My wife and I visited for the first time two years ago and instantly fell in love with the culture and scenery. We knew this was where we wanted to start our lives together so once we graduated college, off we went. It’s been a crazy and exciting experience to say the least but I’m trying to enjoy every minute of it.

I feel that when searching for ‘cool shops in Portland’ or ‘places to eat in Portland’ you’re stuck with the typical tourist attractions and tacky restaurant recommendations. While I have only lived here just over a month, I know the area fairly well and have explored a lot of great spots which I will be sharing with you. I’m hoping this guide will give you some insight into the places I feel make Portland truly special.

Retail:

Aesop

You can’t visit a city without going to the local Aesop store. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to try out their products in person if you haven’t already. The service at their stores is always top notch.

Bang & Olufsen

Some very aesthetically pleasing speakers and home audio in this showroom. The Beosound Edge is enough for me to be impressed.

Design Within Reach

This is modern design at its finest. You can find pieces from well-known designers such as Carl Hansen & Søn, Artek, and of course the infamous Charles & Ray Eames. Little known fact is that the Portland showroom is their largest in the country making it well worth your time to visit.

Frances May

One of the best local clothing stores in town. They offer pieces from several great brands such as Our Legacy and Acne Studios.

1003 SW Washington St, Portland, OR 97205

HAY

This was their first showroom in the US with one now in Costa Mesa, California and one on the way in Chicago, Illinois. If you’re into Scandinavian design then this is the place to go.

Le Labo

By far some of the most unique fragrances you’ll experience at this shop. You’ve probably heard of their most popular scent Santal 33, but I urge you to try them all if you get the chance.

MUJI

The Japanese-based retailer just recently opened a space in Pioneer Square. This place screams minimalism, offering basic essentials in home, apparel, and much more.

Snow Peak

Think of Patagonia’s functionality with a Japanese twist. This is definitely going to be the place that I buy all of my outdoor gear.

Food & Drink:

Bamboo Sushi

I haven’t been back since they’ve recently changed their menu, but this is definitely one of my favorite sushi spots. They offer a pretty large variety of dishes so you can’t really go wrong here.

Blossoming Lotus

Try the biscuits & gravy. Just trust me.

Departure Restaurant + Lounge

By far my favorite restaurant – period. They are located on the 15th floor of The Nines and offer a beautiful modern Asian cuisine. After dinner (I recommend the steamed tempeh buns) venture out to the rooftop bar for exquisite views of the city and one of the best old fashioned cocktails you'll ever have.

Farm Spirit

One of the coolest tasting menus I've ever had the chance to experience. All dishes are vegan and change on a month-to-month basis.

1403 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97214

Little Chickpea

If you’re not in the mood for classic ice cream from Salt & Straw, I’d recommend Little Chickpea. All of their ice cream is made of chickpeas (wait what?) but tastes pretty similar to regular ice cream. My go-to flavor is definitely Cold Brew Coffee.

Petunia's Pies & Pastries

Offering a full vegan menu, this is my heaven when it comes to desserts. If you aren’t in the mood for sweets, give their mac & cheese a try.

Pink Rabbit

This is the only place on this list I have yet to visit, but I already know it’s going to be a favorite. The bar is named after a song by The National (such a Portland thing to do) and gives off such a cool eclectic vibe with its colorful interior and artsy decor.

Vault Cocktail Lounge

Get ready for some dark and moody undertones. If you’re looking for a chill night out, this is the place.
